About Bahamas

The Bahamas or Commonwealth of the Bahamas is archipelagic country located north of Cuba and Hispaniola and east of Florida. It consists of over 700 atolls and cays of which only 40 are inhabited. Biggest island in the Bahamas is Andros Island. Capital city is Nassau and it is situated on the smaller island of New Providence. This island contains 70% of all Bahamian population. Total surface of the Bahamas is 13,878 square kilometers, but this country also controls 470,000 square kilometers of ocean space.

The islands have tropic climate moderated by Gulf Stream and two seasons – summer and winter. In the summer climate is marked with hot and moist air coming from the south. Winters are mild and there has never been a freeze reported in the Bahamas. Beside Andros and New Providence, big islands are Grand Bahama, Abaco, Great Inagua and Long Island. The main source of revenue for the Bahamas is tourism and finance, and sailing tourism takes big part in tourist income. Nassau is, beside capital city, also a center of sailing in the Bahamas.

Requirements for bareboat charter

The Bahamas are part of British Commonwealth, so British licenses for bareboat are widely accepted. Main British license is issued by RYA (Royal Yachting Association). Beside this license, Bahamian authorities recognize American license ASA 104. Also, it is always instructed, as in whole Caribbean to obtain International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for anyone who has a national certificate or license. As in whole Caribbean, there are no strict policies, but before you come you should check the validity of your license. Of course, there are courses in the Bahamas for those who want to get skipper license.

Catamaran sailing in the Bahamas

The sea between all the islands, cays and atoll in the Bahamas is relatively shallow, with lot of small bays and coves, and that means, perfect for catamarans. Perfect example of this is Eleuthera Island, long, narrow and rounded island with broader sections at the southern and northern end, with a bunch of small bays, and low seas surrounding it. Perfect for dropping anchor with your catamaran.

You can plan your entire sailing vacation in the Bahamas as island hopping, from cay to cay, never leaving shallow seas. This kind of sailing is almost carefree and it doesn’t require all of your attention. Of course, if you want more challenge, lot of Bahamian islands have one coast full of shallow turquoise coves and one coast with dark blue water and a little bit challenging winds and waves.

Catamaran sailing in Bahamas

Perfect example of this is the Grand Bahama, northernmost of the islands of the Bahamas. Southern shores of this island are deep and with more steep shore, while northern are shallow, full of coconut palm trees and golden sands. You can split your time there. Spend some time testing your sails with stronger winds, and then drop anchor in a sandy cove.

Bahamian coast

Bahamian coast is very long, compared to the total area of the country. This is due to the large number of islands, islets, atolls and cays. In large numbers the islands are rounded, with a large number of coves and a very sandy bottom, ideal for sea fun - swimming, diving and underwater safari. Sailing in the Bahamas is popular because of the aforementioned relief features.

Bahamian coast

One of the features of the Bahamian coast are coral reefs from which the atolls develop, shallow islands rounded up in the lagoons. There is growing awareness about the conservation of beautiful coral reefs, which are more and more damaged due to climate changes and pollution of the oceans.
As the Bahamas are surrounded by the ocean, there are few places where there are no coral reefs on all sides of the island. The shores of some islands in the Bahamas are a bit steep, with much deeper ocean depths.

Abaco Islands

Sailing Abaco islands will prove you that they have a little bit different consistence than other Bahamian islands. Here the islands consist of limestone with some elevation and are protected on the ocean side by the third largest barrier reef in the world. For the most part the cays are green with mangroves and white-sand beaches, and most are uninhabited. Besides tourism and yachting, everything on these island is about protecting of environment. There are six national parks in this small area of 2009 square kilometers, made to protect flora & fauna, such as coral reefs or Caribbean pine.

Harbour Island

Northeast of Eleuhera you can find small Harbour Island, one of the firs settlement on the Bahamas. Interesting fact – this island was the seat of the first parliament of the Bahamas. This small island is the symbol of luxury. There is only one settlement there, Dunmore Town, and all other surfaces are covered in golf courses. If you’re not into golf, you can lay on the pink sand and enjoy the sun, or you can stop by with your sailboat and enjoy the view. Lot of tourist take catamaran ferries from Nassau to make daily trips there, but it is the best to go there on your own, with your vessel.
