About Cuba

Cuba is an island country in the Caribbean Sea. It lies west of North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Gulf of Mexico, south of the Straits of Florida, northwest of the Windward Passage, and northeast of the Yucatan Channel. Total area of Cuba is 110860 km², with main island of Cuba occupying 104556 km². Terrain of Cuba is mostly flat to rolling plains, with rugged hills and mountains in the southeast. Capital city is Havana and important cities are Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Holguin, Santa Clara and Guantánamo. Cuba's climate is tropical and moderated by trade winds. The dry season lasts from November to April and the rainy season from May to October. Cuba has over 4000 islands, with Isla de la Juventud being the biggest, after Cuba itself. This island is very popular tourist destination, known for its beaches, like Bibijagua Beach. Top destinations for sailing in Cuba are Varadero, Largo de Sur and Trinidad.

Requirements for bareboat charter

Although Cuba has a little bit different type of government, the rules for bareboat charter are pretty much the same as in other Caribbean countries. Cuba is spreading the image of itself as country that is sailing friendly and authorities are not very strict about permissions. If you leave one port and sail to another, you need to inform port authorities, though.

There are restrictions in some areas and if area where you’re sailing is of somewhat military of other importance to Cuban government, your sailboat can be escorted by Cuban coast guard, but that is rarely the case. Best thing to do is to verify your national sailing license with international sailing organization and obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Catamaran sailing in Cuba

Cuba is not just famous for its revolution, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara or Ernest Hemingway. There are also cays, small, low-elevation islands, usually on the surface of the coral reef. Cuba has more than 4000 of those and they are absolutely perfect for catamaran sailing. And one of the best places for your catamaran adventure is Canarreos Archipelago. It is a 90 km stretch of small to medium sized cays with hundreds of anchorages or in another words, most beautiful places imaginable to spend great day full of swimming, diving or just sunbathing. One of the most famous places is Cayo Largo, big tourist resort with its famous Plaja Sirena.

Cuban coast

Cuban coast roughly divides in two areas – main island of Cuba and more than 4000 of cays, small coral islands, which really give the length to Cuban coast in total. Cays can be found on northern, western and southern shores of Cuba, and very few on the easternmost point of the island. There are 4 big cay archipelagos. Most famous are Archipelago of Camagüey and Archipelago of Sabana on the north of the island, which are sometimes considered as one big stretch of islands. They are bordering some small cays which are part of Bahamas.
