Seychelles are archipelago and country located in Indian Ocean, 1500 kilometers off the coast of Africa (Kenya). It is consisted of 115 islands, of which 45 are granite based and all other are coral islands. Surface of Seychelles is 459 square kilometers in total, with population little bit over 92,000. Capital city is Victoria, situated on the largest island of Mahé.

The climate is the same on whole archipelago, and it is quite humid, classified as tropical rainforest climate. Rainfalls are regular, more often in mountainous area than on the coast. Coolest months in the year are July and August, and hot time of the year is from December till April. Most pleasant time of the year is from May till July.

Seychelles have very strict environmental laws and have lot of protected areas, as well as very rich flora and fauna. Tourism is most important economic branch. Every year Seychelles welcome more and more tourists, but this country is a world leader in sustainable tourism. Protection of nature is imperative and because of that, the islands attract visitors who appreciate these efforts.

Requirements for bareboat charter

There are no strict rules for bareboat charter in Seychelles. Usually, the license is not needed, but nevertheless, it is advised, as in numerous other sailing destinations, to bring your sailing license, International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Coastal Skipper qualification. If you don’t bring the license to your vacation, there are other ways to go sailing in Seychelles. Sometimes local marina or port authorities demand that Skipper and 1st Mate must fill in a Sailing CV to confirm that they have the necessary skills for sailing in this country.

Catamaran sailing in Seychelles

Catamarans are very popular in Seychelles. Although biggest islands there are of granite origin, with bigger depths along the coast, most of them are basically atolls and cays, formed on coral reefs. These islands have more shallow parts and beautiful turquoise coves where you can get with your catamaran and drop anchor.

Seychelles were isolated for millions of years, so some very unique things developed here. When you get to one of shallow lagoons and jump into the sea from your catamaran, you’ll probably take a stroll on the beach or simply lay in the shade of a coconut tree. But it is no ordinary coconut. It is coco de mer (sea coconut), unique species which has largest seeds of any plant.

Catamaran sailing in Seychelles

If you’re visiting Outer Islands, you’ll probably enjoy island hopping with your catamaran on Amirante Islands, first discovered by Portuguese seafarer Vasco da Gama in the beginning of 16th century. With its small population and widely spread atolls, this archipelago gives you that special feeling that you’re at the beautiful end of the world.

Seychellois coast

Coast of Seychelles is very interesting, in the terms of origin of the islands and their appearance. Coastline is 491 kilometers long with rounded or irregular shaped granite islands or with atolls and lagoons. Usually, vegetation is thicker and richer along the coast of granite islands, and atolls have more coconut based vegetation.

Some islands have extraordinary combination of beautiful golden beaches with a lush vegetation that leans over the sea and surrounding dark granite rock emerging from the sea and trees. Such place is Anse Source d'Argent beach on the island of La Digue.

Seychellois coast

Seychellois coast hides many wonders, such as Bird Island, the northernmost island of archipelago. This small coral island with population of only 38 is known for its birdlife, with lots of other species like Hawksbill sea turtle or Green sea turtle and it is ‘must go’ place for every sailor. There are hundreds of perfect places for rent a yacht and enjoy this tropic beauty.

Mahé

Mahé island is the biggest island in Seychelles archipelago, but also most important touristic destination in the country. Although 85% percent of country’s population lives there, you’ll have no problem find peaceful place to drop anchor once you set sail from the capital city, or some other place with the marina. Beaches that combine golden sand and granite rocks are strong card of this island, and soon as you see one, you’ll fall in love immediately. Lush vegetation surrounding those beaches, like Port Launay Beach, will give you a little bit ‘Robinson Crusoe’ atmosphere on your unforgettable sailing vacation.
